Last week, the sixth graders wrapped up their introduction to Buddhism and its roots in Ancient India.  This week we have begun the examination of Hinduism and the influence that they caste system had on the notion of reincarnation.  The students have also each designed their own personal shrine, using items, symbols, and pictures that remind them what is important.  They may make their shrines into reality for extra-credit, which is due on Monday, October 20.

This year in history we will be exploring the cultures and events surrounding the peoples of Ancient India, Ancient Judea, and Ancient Rome.  We will not only look at the historical facts and figures, but we will also dive deeply into understanding the reason why different paths were chosen during their history and develop empathy with these ancient people from the commoner to the ruling class.  Although the content of these different cultures are rich, we will also be spending time working on your student skills, such as: writing, reading for comprehension, note taking, researching, organization and preparing for assessments.
Dear Students, I cannot wait to see you all.  I hope that many of you will come to the Community Welcome Event on Tuesday, September 2nd at 8:00 AM.  We will begin in the DeFrancis Gymnasium and then move into advisor teams to go over schedules, hand out planners, assign lockers, discuss themes for the year and our upcoming outdoor education trip.  On Wednesday, you will all be in Mrs. Barber's history room and continue your exploration of the ancient world!  Hope that you all had an enjoyable summer and are ready for a great year!
